FUNCTIONAL AND SEMANTIC FEATURES OF S-GENITIVE AND OF-GENITIVE CONSTRUCTIONS IN FICTION (WITH REFERENCE TO THE NOVEL HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN BY J. K. ROWLING)
Abstract
The article is devoted to the English s-genitive construction (the doctor’s arrival) as well as to the periphrastic prepositional of-genitive construction (the arrival of the doctor). The latter construction displays similar functional and semantic features to the former one. Special attention is paid to the broad range of semantic relations expressed by the two constructions with reference to the semantic classification of genitive types proposed by M. Y. Blokh. These relations are illustrated with the data drawn from the novel “Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban” by J. K. Rowling. The study is based on 200 contexts. The authors point out cases of stylistic use of the s-genitive construction, instances connected with the variation of usage of one and the same noun in the constructions in question as well as the factors affecting the choice between the s-genitive and of-genitive.
