THE ROLE OF HOMONYMS IN BRITISH LITERATURE

Abstract

This article is devoted to the study of the role of homonyms in British literature, explores their influence on language and perception in the text. Homonyms are words that are the same in sound and spelling, but different in meaning. The use of homonymous words can make it difficult to decode information. The differentiation of homonyms is a key point, since in linguistics there are different points of view on the classification of homonymous words. Homonyms have stylistic potential. Therefore, it is important to study the role of context in the interpretation of homonyms in British fiction. The article will also present the differentiation of concepts related to homonymy, such as polysemy and paronyms. The author concludes that in British fiction homonymous words are used to create absurd and comical situations - pun intended. In general, the study of how homonymous words are perceived is an important task for linguistics.
